Launch of Astro SuperSport HD 2 and New Sports Programmes on Astro

Astro SuperSport (ASSP) heralds the return of the football season with the launch of a brand new High Definition (HD) sports channel, Astro SuperSport HD2 on Channel 833 and the introduction of new programmes in HD under ASSP’s 9@Night Campaign aimed to whet the appetite of football fans.

Astro SuperSport HD 2 made its debut with the live broadcast of the BWF World Badminton Championships on August 8, 2011 enabling Malaysians to tune in and cheer for the Malaysian badminton team.

“The launch of the new channels and programmes are in line with Astro’s aim to be the No.1 customer’s choice. We are also bringing more value and key sports content to enhance the customer’s viewing experience,” said Astro’s Head of Sports Business, Lee Choong Khay.

Astro SuperSport HD 2 will complement the current Astro SuperSport HD channel to carry more LIVE sporting action in HD like the Tennis US Open, the ATP Tennis Malaysian Open, the Golf Presidents Cup, and over 200 hours of football events ranging from Bundesliga, UEFA Europa League, Copa Sudamericana and the J-League. Sports fans will also be able to catch more sports action via US PGA Tour, American Football and over 100 hours of Athletics including tennis, extreme sports and sailing events.

“HD is a main driver for our sports package. Today viewers expect nothing less but the best in live sports in true high definition details, cinematic surround sound, vibrant colours, wider screen HD to bring the game to life,” said Lee.

“With 3 sports channels in HD, watching Sports on Astro Byond has gotten even more exciting!” added Lee.

Meanwhile, Astro has revamped its program lineup and strengthen it with the 9@Night Campaign where all the football programmes are shown at 9.00pm weeknights and on weekends, its 9.30pm and 10.00pm respectively. This will make it easier for football fans to remember to tune in to the shows and not miss any exciting updates.

“These seven shows will bring viewers the latest news in the football world, highlights of the major leagues, expert analysis, variety, predictions and more,” said Lee.

Almost all of these shows in HD are hosted and produced by Malaysians, a great indication of the rising standards of the productions of sports content in Malaysia.

“With the launch of Astro SuperSport HD 2, sports fans will now have 12 sports channels – 8 in SD and 3 in HD and 1 Astro Box Office Sports,” ended Lee.
