Vans Spring 2011 Men’s Apparel Line Highlights
This season’s assortment celebrates Vans’ rich heritage as an iconic skate and surf brand. This season we revisited our past, drawing inspiration from old memorabilia – vintage shoeboxes, photos, stickers and classic footwear. Breathing new life into a range of spring staples including button-downs shirts, lightweight jackets, tanks, tees and board-shorts, we are proud to deliver a diverse collection that reflects the essence of a 45-year old Southern California staple.
This spring our signature apparel features the individual tastes of Joel Tudor, Anthony Van Engelen and Johnny Layton, with each guy bringing his personal style and creative input into the line. Joel’s popular collection of casual surf wear returns with a new assortment of spring friendly pieces, while Anthony and Johnny deliver a tight mix of stylish, laid-back garments. Working closely with our surf team riders, we’ve expanded our boardshorts offering this year, incorporating a diverse range of styles including the all new Era Boardshort, which comes in three different materializations as well as the ultra lightweight Amphibian and two new Joel Tudor Signature editions. Also look for special projects with Neil Blender and Andy Davis and a killer set of Legends Tees that feature classic photos of skate greats Tony Alva, Steve Caballero and John Cardiel.
This spring we are proud to welcome the Gudauskas brothers, Tanner, Dane and Pat to the Vans apparel team. The talented surf trio, who are now head-to-toe, have begun working directly with the Vans design team, bringing their creativity to Vans’ boardshort program and Surfsiders footwear collection. The G-Bros join a solid apparel crew that also includes Southern California surf icon Joel Tudor, Puerto Rican ripper Dylan Graves and Northern California shredder Russell Smith along with our heavy-hitting skate line-up of Anthony Van Engelen, Johnny Layton and Andrew Allen.
Joel Tudor Signature Collection
Joel’s popular signature collection returns for spring with his personal style and creativity injected into a great new assortment of casual surf pieces. This season Joel marries his love for surf and skate, teaming up with legendary skateboarder and artist Neil Blender on several pieces for his collection including two tees, a tank and a boardshort. Other standout styles include the JT Carbine, an effortlessly cool new herringbone shirt, the JT Squall, an on-trend burnout fleece hoodie and the JT Surf Club Jersey, a stylish cotton and viscose blended tee that was inspired by vintage surf contest jerseys. Also look for a new striped tank, the JT Waveset as well as the JT Maritime Boardshort which gets an update this season with fun Neil Blender artwork and a sharp café brown striped model.
Working with surf team riders Joel Tudor, Dylan Graves and Pat, Dane and Tanner Gudauskas, we are proud to deliver an expanded line of boardshorts this spring, featuring classic lines and timeless style that is unmistakably Vans. This season’s solid assortment features several new styles including the all new Era and Amphibian boardshorts as well as Tudor’s popular returning style, the JT Maritime.
Inspired by our classic Era shoe, we took lines, patterns and details from the best-selling surf and skate model and re-worked them into a killer new set of boarsdshorts complete with our iconic red heel tab, a shoe tongue styled fly and an eyelet waistband closure. The Era is available in three different materializations this year: The Era Classic features a lightweight and moldable cotton-nylon canvas blend and comes in four sharp colorways, while The Era Check comes in a quick dry 2-way stretch fabric and has a comfortable dobby check grid texture that minimizes skin contact and friction to prevent rash.
The new Amphibian short features a 4-way ultra lightweight stretch fabric with a water resistant finish providing a perfect balance between performance flexibility and out-of the water shape retention. Developed with Dylan Graves, the Amphibian is designed for the new generation of high performance freesurfers where range of motion is key for ripping.
Vans x Neil Blender for Joel Tudor
In the early-to-mid 80’s, Neil Blender left his footprint in skate history with his iconic artwork that was as unique and inspiring as his style of skateboarding. He was one of the pioneers of skaters doing their own art and his influence has undeniably set the tone for generations of artists in the skateboarding community to this day. A longtime fan of Blender, Joel tapped into Neil this spring to create artwork for a small collection of his signature apparel styles for Vans including a tank, tees and boardshort, all featuring custom designs.
Vans x Ando & Friends
This Spring Vans is excited to introduce a special project with Andy Davis’ new venture, Ando & Friends. A well known, San Diego based surf artist, Andy literally grew up in Vans, crafting countless custom pairs over the years that have accompanied him all over the world and on many adventures. Creator of brands Free and Byrd, Davis’ latest extension, Ando & Friends, is an art driven clothing line from Andy and his pals featuring designs that are simple and fun and capture the soulful aesthetic of riding waves. Their work also has a funky, retro vibe and often features clever, tongue-in-cheek humor.
Drawing inspiration from life, travels, family, music and the ocean to name a few, Andy & Co. injected their unique aesthetic into a small collection of apparel and footwear for Vans this season. The collab includes two cool tees as well as a Lanai sandal and E-Street surf sider.
This fall Vans delivers another tight bag assortment that includes the popular Joel Tudor Duffle (below, right), the perfect bag for a weekend surf trip or a quick afternoon shred. Made from 100% cotton canvas, the functional, unfussy bag features a removable wet/dry bag for your wetsuit as well as multiple pockets for easy organization.
