Maxis Scholarship for Talented Malaysians

MAXIS ENABLES 29 HIGH-ACHIEVING MALAYSIANS TO FURTHER THEIR STUDIES LOCALLY & ABROAD
Maxis’ Scholarship for Excellence continues to reward talented Malaysians, including children of Maxis customers & employees.

Maxis Berhad (“Maxis”), Malaysia’s leading integrated communications provider, continues its tradition of providing young Malaysian talents with the opportunity to unlock their true potential. Today, 29 high-achieving young Malaysians – including children of Maxis Postpaid customers and employees – received Maxis Scholarship for Excellence Awards (MSEA) to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate programmes locally and abroad.

The awards were presented by Deputy Minister of Information Communication and Culture, YB Dato’ Joseph Salang and Maxis’ Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Sandip Das at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

Maxis is the first communications provider in Malaysia to offer merit-based scholarships to children of customers and employees. The Maxis Scholarship programme has been successful in attracting the best in Malaysian talent since its inception in 2005.

Current and previous recipients have gained admittance to courses in the fields of their choice at prestigious universities in Malaysia and other parts of the world. Some of the educational institutions that recipients have secured places at include the London School of Economics, King’s College of London, University of Oxford, Imperial College of London, Columbia University, Harvard Business School, University Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, University Kebangsaan Malaysia, University Teknologi Malaysia, Monash University and International Medical University.

In presenting the awards to the recipients, YB Dato’ Joseph Salang said, “The Maxis Scholarship for Excellence programme cultivates and celebrates the strength found in diversity. As a merit-based scholarship programme, it provides opportunities to outstanding young Malaysians from diverse backgrounds and cultures to realise their fullest potential and consequently, a chance to contribute to the country’s vision.”

YB Dato’ Joseph Salang added, “In order to actualise its vision of a high income nation, the Government understands the importance of improving the synergies between the public and private sectors in order to make investing and operating in Malaysia more attractive. The Maxis Scholarship programme is a shining example of how a corporate organisation can come forward to support the Government by helping to create a diverse Malaysian talent pool that can help to drive the national vision.”

Created with the objective of nurturing high performing Malaysian talent, the MSEA is divided into three categories – the postgraduate programme for high achievers; the undergraduate programme for Maxis postpaid customers, and the undergraduate programme for children of Maxis employees. There are five allocations a year for the postgraduate awards as well as 40 and 13 undergraduate awards allocated for Maxis postpaid customers or their children and children of Maxis employees respectively. Today, Maxis presented scholarships to four postgraduate recipients, 22 undergraduate recipients who are children of Maxis postpaid customers, and three undergraduate recipients who are children of Maxis employees.

Mr. Sandip Das, Maxis’ Chief Executive Officer said, “Through our Maxis Scholarship for Excellence programme, we are building a future pool of bright and talented young Malaysians. This is one effort that will go a long way in nation building. At Maxis, excellence comes to us as second nature and we want that to inspire young people. Our scholarships are rich in endowment to make their university stints trouble free and we encourage students to come back to serve the nation.”

Over 2,000 hopefuls applied for the latest MSEA scholarships. Applicants were put through a stringent selection process before 29 recipients were selected by a reputable panel of judges. The distinguished panel included Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ibrahim Ahmad Bajunid – Deputy President of INTI International University, Malaysia; Prof. Datuk Dr. Roziah Omar – Director of Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT), Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia; Prof. Dr. Stefanie Shamila Pillai – Director of University Malaya Centre for Industrial Training and Relations (CITRA) and Prof. N. Balakrishnan – Associate Director of the Indian Institute of Science

Usha Kanagaratnam, a recipient of the postgraduate scholarship currently undergoing studies in the Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford expresses how she would like to actively participate in analyses that would contribute towards Malaysia’s social development. Kanagaratnam shared that she aims to “contribute substantially to activities relating to advocacy, information dissemination and the building of knowledge around social and economic development.”

Siti Sarah Binti Affendi, a recipient who is pursuing her Clinical Medical Research PHD at Imperial College in London said that after her experience abroad, she intends to “contribute to the educational sector in terms of research, training and teaching.”

Adrian Ow Yung Hwei, another recipient, shared his personal journey with the Maxis team, “I am grateful to Maxis for the opportunity of pursuing my studies at Harvard Business School. Going to Harvard Business School has enabled me to fulfil multiple transitions: from being an agent to a principal, a consultant to an investor, and from a person of promise to a man of action”. Ow aspires to return to Malaysia upon the completion of his studies to open up low-cost investing opportunities across the Asia Pacific region.

Maxis first launched its prestigious MSEA Postgraduate programme in 2005 to support high-achieving Malaysian graduates wishing to pursue postgraduate studies and research at top universities abroad. In September 2008, the scope of this programme was subsequently enlarged to encompass the MSEA Undergraduate Programme which is open to Malaysian citizens who have been Maxis postpaid customers for a minimum period of one year (or the Malaysian children of these customers) and also to the children of Maxis employees

The next window of selection for the undergraduate scholarship awards will be open from November 2010. Applications for postgraduate scholarships may be sent in throughout the year. For further details, please visit www.maxis.com.my/scholarship.
