48 HOUR FILM CHALLENGE RETURNS!

Aspiring filmmakers will have the chance to put their talents to the test again this year as the KL 48 Hour Film Project (KL48HFP) competition makes its third appearance.

The Kuala Lumpur chapter of the international 48 Hour Film Project competition made its debut in 2010 and gained popularity among local film makers and film enthusiasts.

This year, from October 5 to 7, the participating aspiring filmmakers and film enthusiasts will conceptualise, create, direct, edit and submit a short film, all within a grueling 48 hours.

The participating teams will draw their respective genre randomly on the Kick Off Day which will take place at the KL Tower, Jalan Raja Chulan on October 5 and submit their films within 48 hours at the same location.

This year, the competition will be judged by renowned film directors and producers; Julia Fraser, Ken S. Yap and Shukor Kadir.

As a producer, Julia Fraser is collaborating with award winning director, U-Wei Haji Saari on ‘Hanyut’ (Almayer’s Folly), to be released in 2013. Among her other notable film credits includes Siddiq Barmak’s ‘Osama’ (Golden Globe for Best Foreign language film in 2004) and ‘Three Days To Forever’ by Riri Riza (Indonesia) among others.

Ken S. Yap is also a well-known director and producer in the local film circuit, with credits in films such as Nasi Lemak 2.0, Phua Chu Kang: The Movie and Petaling Street Warriors.

Film industry veteran, Shukor Kadir is well-known in the local and international film circuit, with credits in films such as Anna and The King (with 20th Century Fox, USA) and Poussieres de Vie, Academy nominee for Best Foreign Language Film in 1995 among others.

Winner of the KL48HFP, Best Film of Kuala Lumpur will be competing against 114 other Best Films of cities around the world at Filmapalooza 2013 in Hollywood, USA. Top films from Filmapalooza will get the opportunity to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner.

The producers of the Best Film of Kuala Lumpur will also win two flight tickets to Filmapalooza as well as a RM30,000 filming grant from the National Film Development Corporation.

The films will be screened at TGV Cineplex in Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur on Oct 13 while the awards presentation ceremony will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Tower in Jalan Raja Chulan, KL on Oct 14.

This year, the KL48HFP will also be collaborating with DevFlections (*note : correct spelling) and plays host to the creative PASAARKARYA @ KL48DevFlections charity bazaar. The bazaar will be taking place from October 5-7 as well as from October 12-14 at the KL Tower, Jalan Raja Chulan, Kuala Lumpur.

The event will be followed with the 1337 KL48Hackathon, to be held from October 19-21. Organised by I-train and Cyberview, the event is the first ever Malaysian Transmedia based Hackathon, where computer programmers and software developers compete to develop Mobile Apps for the Best Film and KL48HFP.

Transmedia storytelling (also known as transmedia narrative or multiplatform storytelling) is the technique of telling a single story or story experience across multiple platforms and formats using current digital technologies.
