Hazra Ghazali may be 94kg but that didn’t stop the 28 year old home tutor from proving herself by beating 9 other plus-sized ladies when she was crowned “Jumbo Queen 2013” in the Jumbo Queen 2013 Final, held on 13th October 2013.
The pageant was divided into three rounds with the start of the ladies modelling casual wear for the self-introduction part followed by showcase of their talent and finally the finale in evening wear. The ladies were judged on their stage personality, confidence, overall impression and crowd response by five judges namely; Mr KK Lim, Senior Manager Marketing Communications of Sungei Wang Plaza, Ms Suzanne Soo, Senior Manager, Senior Manager, Marketing of Magnum 4D Berhad, Mrs Somaya Ong, Mrs Globe Malaysia 2013, Mr Casey Koh, Managing Director, Music Director and Choreographer of Broadway Academy Asia and Cik Adila Shakir or fondly known as “Dilly”, MIX FM Radio Announcer.

Held since 2010 until now, this pageant was inspired by the Thailand’s Jumbo Queen Pageant and Sungei Wang Plaza is the only shopping mall in Malaysia which organizes such pageant. This pageant is open to single or married ladies with a minimum weight of 80 kg.
Throngs of supporters comprising family, friends and acquaintances of the contestants packed the Concourse Area with huge banners bearing the names and pictures of their supported contestant(s). The atmosphere was filled with screams, cheers and laughter with the crowd being very responsive and supportive with some even blowing whistles to show their endless support for the ladies. To spice up the event, the previous Jumbo Queen contestants of 2011 & 2012 also did a special dance performance alongside with the special appearance of Karina Abdullah (Jumbo Queen 2010), Moon Yong (Jumbo Queen 2011) and Honey Aisha, (Jumbo Queen 2012).
Newly crowned Hazra, who was among the crowd favourite astounded the audience with her energetic dance performance accompanied by two male dancers to the tune of “All the Single Ladies” by Beyonce. She also won the subsidiary title of ; “Most Popular”. A student of National Art Culture And Heritage Academy (Aswara), Hazra is a down to earth lady who described her achievement today as a gift from God. “I am the only one who has this “limited edition size” in the family as I love savouring my mother’s home cooked food all the time. This pageant truly boosts my self-confidence and taught be to be myself. I am no longer down as I now have the crown”; said Hazra. She received RM5500 Cash and prizes worth RM5600. 1st Runner-Up went to Sabrina Jane Anthony, a Senior Quality Analyst (aged 35 and weighed 86kg) who also won the “Most Talented” Award. She received RM3,500 Cash and prizes worth RM2300. 2nd Runner-Up went to Rachel Tan, an Account Manager (aged 27 and weighed 85kg) who received RM2,000 Cash and prizes worth RM900.
KK Lim, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications Department of Sungei Wang Plaza was quoted as saying “Jumbo Queen 2013 provides a platform for plus-size women to express their individuality, and be in the limelight and battle it on equal ground for the crown. This year’s pageant received overwhelming entries from contestants nationwide such as Sabah, Perak, Johor, Kedah, Penang and Melaka. I hope that this pageant will continue to inspire other plus-sized ladies out there to be confident.”
Jumbo Queen 2013 is presented by Magnum and sponsored by A-Look Eyewear. The official radio stations are My FM and Mix FM while the official magazine is feminine. Official make-up is Xpression Make-Up Academy followed by ericaplus as the official outfit. Official hair-do by Miko Hair Studio & Academy and official skincare is Lafa Quen.
