Kem Badminton Astro Opens for Registration

Young badminton enthusiasts can now look forward to being trained in Japan after Kem Badminton Astro calls to register for it try-outs now. This is made possible thanks to the recent partnership between Astro Kasih, the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Astro and Nippon Badminton Association (NBA) for a 3 year strategic partnership to provide training for Kem Badminton Astro shuttlers in Tokyo, Japan in Nov – Dec this year.

Try-out sessions to be held in six states

The try-out sessions will be held in May and August 2015, with the following states, Pulau Pinang, Kelantan and Johor; followed by Kota Kinabalu, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur in August 2015.

60 participants will be shortlisted to undergo a one-week Intensive Training in Kuala Lumpur conducted by former national badminton players Wong Choong Hann, Lee Wan Wah, Chew Choon Eng and Chan Chong Ming.

The details of the try-out sessions and the registration deadline are as follows:

• 9 May 2015 (Saturday) at Dewan Badminton PBA, Pulau Pinang (closing date : 6 May)
• 15 May 2015 (Friday) at Dewan MSSK, Kota Bahru, Kelantan (closing date : 12 May)
• 22 May 2015 (Friday) at Dewan Persatuan Badminton Larkin, Johor Bahru, Johor (closing date : 19 May)
• 8 August 2015 (Saturday) at Dewan Badminton Kompleks Sukan Likas, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah (closing date : 5 Aug)
• 15 August 2015 (Saturday) at Arena Sukan Simpang Tiga, Kuching, Sarawak (closing date : 12 Aug)
• 22 August 2015 (Saturday) at Kompleks MSN Jalan Raja Muda, Kuala Lumpur (closing date : 19 Aug)

The badminton training sessions will culminate in a 2 week Intensive Advanced Training at the Japan National Training Centre, Tokyo, Japan from 21 November 2015 until 2 December 2015 by the Japan National Coaches.

As a result of the partnership, our shuttlers can also look forward to a cultural exchange programme where the Japan Junior Team and selected participants of Kem Badminton Astro will be trained by the Malaysian badminton coaches in Kuala Lumpur in August 2015.

As the nation’s leading media group, Astro is committed to the development of local sports and local athletes. Badminton is a popular sport among Malaysians, and Astro, leveraging on its various platforms, is pleased to play a role in raising the standards of badminton amongst Malaysians to an international level.

Launched in 2012, KBA is collaboration between Astro Kasih, Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Youth & Sports, Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM) and Nippon Badminton Association, Japan. The project aims to identify and nurture talented children aged between 10-12 years of age to becoming badminton prodigies through comprehensive badminton training programmes. This marks the fourth year-running since it began in 2012.

Kem Badminton Astro was initiated to encourage young Malaysians with aspirations to be the next world badminton champions to realise their dreams. Over 4,300 kids have participated in the Kem Badminton Astro since launch.
