Avril Lavigne Cleared From Copyright Suit

Canadian singer Avril Lavigne is cleared from a copyright suit.

Avril Lavigne was reported to have settled her lawsuit with songwriters Tommy Dunbar and James Gangwer, who claimed that her hit song, “Girlfriend”, was plagiarizing the Rubinoos 1979 single, “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”.

Dunbar and Gangwer filed the lawsuit in July 2007 against Avril (and her songwriting partner, Dr. Luke). On Tuesday (Jan 15) however, they issued a statement that cleared Lavigne and Luke from the suit.

“We are satisfied that any similarities between the two songs resulted from Avril and Luke’s use of certain common and widely used lyrics,”

“We therefore completely exonerate Avril and Luke from any wrongdoing of any kind in connection with the claims made by us in our lawsuit.”
