AirAsia Commemorates Malaysian Chairmanship of ASEAN

AirAsia, the truly Asean airline unveiled an exclusive aircraft livery on an Airbus A320 today, which is on display at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) ’15 in commemoration of Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN.

The unveiling of this exclusive aircraft livery was graced by Dato’ Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Transport for Malaysia, as the Guest of Honour; Dato’ Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob, Director-General of ASEAN – Malaysia National Secretariat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia; Datuk Kamarudin Meranun, Executive Chairman of AirAsia Berhad and Group CEO of AirAsia X; Aireen Omar, CEO of AirAsia Berhad, Benyamin Ismail, Acting CEO of AirAsia X Berhad and Anaz Tajuddin, Group Head of Engineering, AirAsia.

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Group CEO of AirAsia said, “ASEAN is AirAsia’s home. We are excited that Malaysia is chairing ASEAN this year as Malaysia is where the dream of AirAsia started. This is also the year where the ASEAN Economic Community and ASEAN Open Skies are expected to be implemented. There is an urgent need for a common regulator to be established to ensure proper standards are implemented to promote travel within the booming ASEAN region. AirAsia is committed to supporting these key initiatives as we are firm believers in ASEAN, as we have showcased through our family of airlines and extensive route network across this region.”

“Connecting ASEAN is what we do best and we will continue to invest in providing the best network across ASEAN and beyond, not only connecting people intra ASEAN but also bringing tourists to ASEAN.” added Fernandes.

Dato’ Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Transport for Malaysia said “I fully agree with Tan Sri Tony Fernandes that we need to have a collaborative effort to make the Asean open skies policy work. As we discussed earlier today, the policy is currently ‘half open’ and as a Minister of Transport, we are chairing this year’s Asean, which coincides with 2015 Asean Economic Community, which makes it even more memorable”.

“I would like to thank AirAsia for making this special plane livery to commemorate our Asean Chairmanship, dedicated to the Malaysian Government to chair Asean and pioneer more changes in Asean policy especially in the aviation sector. Aviation is ‘the sector’ in Asean which needs to grow faster and connectivity in Asean is important. AirAsia, which is a company in this sector can make this happen”.

The exclusive livery design depicts the line “Connecting ASEAN” in the bright ASEAN colours of red, yellow and blue surrounded icons representing all 10 ASEAN member states, such as the Hornbill of Sarawak, the Pha Tat Luang of Laos, the Angkor Wat of Cambodia and many more. A special logo with the theme “Our People, Our Community, Our Vision, Malaysia 2015” can also be seen on the aircraft livery, commemorating Malaysia’s 2015 ASEAN chairmanship.

The AirAsia group covers a total of 160 routes within ASEAN and offers one of the most extensive route networks in this region.

Travelling across Asean is now much more affordable and convenient with the introduction of the recently launched AirAsia Asean Pass (10 credits at RM499) and the Asean Pass+ (20 credits at RM888) which will enable travellers to utilise pre-purchased credits which acts as a single currency and diminishing foreign exchange rates to redeem flights throughout Asean.
